Day:2012 http://day.alingham.com This is my second Project365, taking a photo a day in the places around me. This year, I am undertaking it completely in Black and White, with photos taken on my iPhone. posterous.com Thu, 02 Feb 2012 22:30:58 -0800 034 / Tradition http://day.alingham.com/034-tradition http://day.alingham.com/034-tradition

My photo today was going to be the massive burgers we had for dinner from Burger Wisconsin.
But I ate it.
So instead it'll have to be the left over sauce bottle.

It's been quite a journey for this photo.
Back in January 2011, I was at the Basin Reserve watching NZ take on Pakistan in a test match. During one of his spells, I took several photos of Daniel Vettori as he bowled a delivery.
Later when I got home I stitched them together, and posted the result on Twitter. Iain O'Brien, ex-BlackCap fast bowler, saw my photo and asked if I'd like him to get Dan to sign my photo the next time he saw him. I was blow away. It took nearly a year however, during which the photo waited patiently for its glory to arrive.
Today, that photo returned in a frame - my first professionally framed photograph, signed by Daniel Vettori, arranged by Iain O'Brien.

Any journey requires time.
This is the watch I got given for my 21st. It's actually one of the longest lasting treasures I have, and it's still going strong.
I like things that people treasure. It's origins can be remembered, and they often journey through life with you unforgotten.

Please comment with a treasure you have, and it's origins.

First day back at school begins a journey of the humble coloured pencil. It begins it's time neatly arranged with its limited friends (all of whom look exactly the same as it!)
By the time it's journey is done, it's seen many things, been to many desks, and has come away just a little shorter.
The colours in this photo (top left clockwise to bottom left) are green, dark green, pink, and red.

Once again, creatively drained, I have resorted to taking a photo of an old photo I took of Vicky that actually works quite well. Yawning is, of course, contagious; and those who are extremely vulnerable will find themselves yawning at first sight of it.
Feeling tired?

A little bit uninspired today. You might say I was 'creatively tired'. So this photo is what I like to do to rest and recuperate: Crash deep into the nearest bean bag, usually in front of the T.V.

This defines tired. A rust-riddled diplexer that was causing all sorts of issues when it rained, often knocking out reception all together, leaving the view of the TV snowy and black.
The view up on the roof however was pretty cool.

This weeks theme is "Tired". Rather than a whole heap of blurry-eyed self portraits, I'm going to try and find things that are tired, and maybe have been given new life. Over the weekend I was able to begin something I'd wanted to start for a while - a camera collection. Easy to do when one of them was $2.00. This Kodak Instamatic 233-X was a bit more pricey at $8.00. Also note the link between 'tired' and the struggle Kodak are going through now financially. Its possible that Kodak as a company are tired.
If anyone has any old (not cheap 90's plastic ones though) cameras they'd like to donate to my collection, please let me know.

So this photo isn't technically from today, but let me explain.
Vicky and I started Alphabet dating not long after we got married. Yesterday we started 'M' Date. It started with a mystery that lead to Vicky saving M&M's from the microwave. We then headed up to Masterton for an overnight stay. This was the hotel we stayed at; one that I've always wanted to stay at, but can now recommend.
Today we made our way back through the Wairarapa, stopping at each town to look through second hand shops and the like. We came away with a few things we liked and wanted. It was a very good getaway and a great way to start a weekend.

In the last Project365 I did in 2009, the photo I took was very much linked to the activities I did.
Maybe it's because I'm on holiday, or maybe it's because I'm using a weekly theme. Anyway - this post and subsequent photo fits into both of these, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out too!
So yesterday we got a new lawn mower, and when I say new, it is new for us. And it was only fitting that I test it out. In the process, sweeping the leaves lead to finding a deserted snail shell.
Snail shells are a natural spiral, and incredibly and complexly beautiful, which is probably why they make a great subject for macro photography.

Today's photo involves a bit of construction, a bit of blind luck, and a bit of post-processing. I call this Mt. Bollicina. Bollicina is Italian for Bubble. Ive always had a fascination with Italy. Recently friends of ours got back from their trip to Europe, and shared their photos of Rome with us. It took me back to my own visit there, and the reason I fell in love with the place.

This weeks theme is macro. Macro photography is where you take close up photos. Typically this is used for flowers, insects, and water, though obviously its not limited to those.
This is going to prove to be a challenge on the iPhone, but not impossible.
This photo is quite interesting in its lead up. Firstly, I used a technique I picked up a couple of weeks ago in which you spend ten minutes looking around your environment before finding a subject. Then you take 5 minutes preparing and taking your shots. This flower stood out in my very green bush, as it is brilliant red. I also cheated a little bit, by holding a magnifying glass in front of my phone and then cropping the photo as well.
This week I hope to experiment with different subject matter, as I very much love macro photography.
